055: Unveiling Awe: Discovering the Depths of Human Experience in Normandy
Mar 03, 2024Dr. Barbara Fredrickson eloquently defines awe as an encounter where one is "overwhelmed by greatness." In the picturesque landscapes of Normandy, France, I discovered firsthand the transformative power of awe.
In 2007, I embarked on a poignant journey to Normandy, accompanied by 21 high school students. Our trip itinerary included visiting the Normandy American Cemetery and the historic site of Normandy. As a former history teacher for ten years, I studied World Wars I and II and the Korean and Vietnam Conflicts in detail, so you can imagine my eagerness to learn more.
Standing atop the cliffs in a crater overlooking the English Channel, I was overcome by a profound sense of awe. The weight of history pressed down upon me as I contemplated the valor and sacrifice of those who had come before. Tears welled in my eyes as I realized the magnitude of the events unfolding in that spot.
Before disembarking the tour bus, the guide said we’d only have 10 minutes in this location because “There is not much to see here.”
This dismissive statement, "Not much to see here," struck a chord. At that moment, I realized there was much more to discover beneath the surface. Beyond the physical landscape lay a tapestry of human emotion and resilience waiting to be uncovered.
My experience in Normandy resonates deeply with the research on awe and well-being. Scholars like Dr. Barbara Fredrickson and Dr. Dacher Keltner have studied the profound impact of awe on human psychology and emotion. Through awe-inspiring experiences, we expand our perspective, foster connection, and embrace the complexities of life.
RESEARCH
Awe-Inspiring experiences can play a significant role in our well-being by eliciting psychological and emotional responses that contribute to overall health and happiness.
Here's how AWE contributes to well-being:
- Positive Emotions: Awe often evokes positive emotions such as wonder and amazement. These can help counteract negative emotions like stress, anxiety, and sadness, improving psychological well-being. (Shiota et al., 2007.)
- Increased Perspective: Awe can expand our perspective and worldview. When we experience something awe-inspiring, it often reminds us of the vastness and complexity of the world, helping us to put our problems and concerns into perspective. This broader perspective can reduce feelings of self-importance and foster a greater connection with something larger than ourselves. (Rudd et al., 2012.)
- Enhanced Connection: Awe experiences often lead to a heightened sense of connection. Sharing awe-inspiring moments with friends, family, or even strangers can strengthen social bonds and foster a sense of community and belonging. (Piff et al., 2015.)
- Boosted Creativity: Awe can stimulate creativity by inspiring new ideas and perspectives. Exposure to awe-inspiring experiences can spark the imagination and encourage individuals to think outside the box, leading to increased creativity and innovation. (Bai et al., 2017)
- Increased Altruism: Research suggests that experiencing awe can promote prosocial behavior and altruism. Individuals who felt awe-struck felt they had more time available, were less impatient, more willing to volunteer to help others, more strongly preferred experiences over material products, and experienced greater life satisfaction. Additionally, mediation analyses revealed awe’s ability to alter the subjective experience of time influenced these changes in decision-making because experiencing awe brought people into the present moment. (Rudd, et al., 2012)
